Word Alive Inc. began as a distributor in 1987 and today is one of the largest and most trusted suppliers of Christian books, entertainment, and giftware in Canada. We represent over thirty publishing houses in the Canadian market of Christian bookstores, trade bookstores (such as Chapters/Indigo, Costco, Superstores, and Wal-Mart), as well as thousands of churches, ministries, and schools.
With Word Alive’s relationship with publishers in mind, authors approached us with completed manuscripts, hoping we could pass them on to our contacts. Unfortunately, traditional publishers receive thousands and thousands of submissions, and we began to notice that there is some wonderful writing that remains unpublished. With our passion for supporting the Canadian market and our strong belief that books can transform lives, an idea was formed…
Over a decade ago, Word Alive Press was conceived in a format that can best be described in today’s vernacular as a “hybrid” publisher—a company that harnesses the power of conventional royalty-based publishing and distribution, infusing into it a new partnership approach.
This nugget of history is a major distinction between our services and those of any other publishing company. Since our inception, sales, marketing, and distribution have been at the forefront of our growth. We understand the Canadian Christian market, and our authors benefit from that expertise. When working with Word Alive Press, authors have access to professional services, and in particular the supply-chain distribution that’s needed to reach the widest possible audience with their message. On June 1 of 2016, Word Alive distributors merged with US-based Anchor Distributors. This new North American strategy directly benefits our Canadian authors as their books will now be stocked and available to the U.S. market, as well as Canada.

A traditional publisher reviews manuscript proposals for submission, and if they accept your work, they cover all the expenses involved in publishing. Traditional publishers provide excellent services, including marketing and distribution, and authors receive a royalty for books sold. Unfortunately, traditional publishers are only able to publish a small number of the manuscripts they receive (less than 0.1%). Often they prefer to receive manuscripts via an agent, which can be difficult to obtain as well. Another challenge to traditional publishers is that they have the final say on all content, editing, cover design, etc., since they’re footing the bill.
The difficulty in obtaining a traditional publisher led to the birth of self-publishing, where an author can publish their own book. This may either be done through the help of a company, or the author can seek out and hire a cover designer, editor, printer, etc. This is a very hands-on process and is certainly not for the faint of heart. The challenge to self-publishing is that at the end of the day, you have books and little or no support from anyone in terms of how to sell those books. Bookstores are often understandably hesitant to stock copies of a self-published book, as they are unsure if industry standards have been followed (which they usually aren’t).

Asking the right questions of your publisher is extremely important, so we strongly encourage you to ask us whatever is on your mind. To help get you started, we’ve put together a handy list of some of the most common questions (and answers) that we hear from authors like you.
1. Does Word Alive Press promote my book?
Yes! Since the inception of Word Alive Inc. in 1987, sales, marketing, and distribution have been at the forefront of our growth. Our annual marketing calendar is filled with opportunities to impact consumers through retail partnerships that promote Canadian content. Word Alive Inc. markets and sells books and products to Christian bookstores, trade bookstores (such as Chapters/Indigo, Costco, Superstores, and Wal-Mart), as well as thousands of churches, ministries, schools, and events.
2. What is distribution?
Word Alive Press authors receive a service no other publishing company in Canada can provide: supply-chain distribution into the Canadian and US markets! But what does this mean? Bookstores order stock through distributors, and generally not through publishers or individuals. When authors self-publish their books and do not have a distributor, they often face significant challenges in getting bookstores to stock their book. A bookstore may be hesitant to give valuable shelf space to an unknown author without a publisher and distributor’s stamp of approval.
Word Alive Press authors have the benefit of representation with an established and well-respected distributor, Word Alive. The resources and relationships that Word Alive has will be put to use for you! Our customer care and support team will pick, pack, and ship orders for your book. Our accounts receivable/invoicing team will take care of the billing and collect payment for sales of your book. Not only this, but as a leading force in the professional distribution of quality resources in Canada for over twenty-five years, Word Alive’s reputation will be an asset to your book! In addition to Word Alive Distributors, as of June 1, 2016, we will also be working directly with Anchor Distributors, a US-based distribution company that will facilitate distribution of our books into the American market.
3. I would like my book to be available all around the world. Is this possible?
In addition to distribution into the Canadian market through Word Alive and to the USA via Anchor, Word Alive Press also has a relationship with Ingram, the largest distributor of books worldwide. This means your book will automatically be available on popular websites such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble. It also means that any bookstore anywhere in the world can order in copies via Ingram.
4. Is Word Alive Press a vanity publisher?

5. Who owns the copyright to my book?
You do! With Word Alive Press, we place the copyright in your name and you retain the rights to your book at all times.
6. Is editing included in the cost of the publishing programs?
The cost of editing is separate, and we provide customized quotes. Rather than quoting per word or per page, our editing quotes are personalized to the unique needs of your manuscript. 7. Is printing included in the cost of the publishing programs?
The printing costs are separate, as they are based on each customized project. Depending on the number of pages, special cover finishes, trim size, and paper type, we would be happy to provide you with a printing quote for your project. Contact us today for a full cost breakdown!
8. Do you use an on-demand printer?
Yes. Fortunately, all authors who publish with Word Alive Press will benefit from the use of two different kinds of printers. Print on demand technology allows for shorter print runs and provides a lot of flexibility. After your initial print run, you can print in any quantity that you need and these books may be shipped anywhere in the world. Books printed on demand are very economical for authors who want to do smaller print runs, and the resulting book is of high quality! 9. Who do I work with throughout the publishing process?
One of the many benefits of publishing with Word Alive Press is that you’re not alone! Throughout the publishing process, our team will walk alongside you. You’ll work closely with a Publishing Consultant who will manage the project, and a Publishing Assistant who focuses on the day-to-day details for your book. This team will provide advice, guidance, insight, and feedback on all aspects of publishing and marketing. Our priority is to make sure you are completely satisfied with the final product and that you enjoy the process from start to finish!
