Writing Prompt: Ready, Set, NaNoWriMo!
By Word Alive Press

Today’s writing prompt is very special; it’s October 31st and you know what that means: NaNoWriMo starts tomorrow! Beloved by avid writers the world over, National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo ) is the opportunity for you to try your hand at finishing a novel in just 1 month! This can be a great exercise for novice and advanced writers—get over your writer’s block, your fear of finishing something, your exhaustion with the writing process, and band together with your fellow writers for a mad-dash race to complete at least 50,000 words by November 30th.

Check out the NaNoWriMo website here to find out more.

Then, if you think you’re up for the task, why not gear up for the grand event with a quick writing exercise: take two characters from your (soon-to-be-written) novel, and stage a scene between them that would not actually happen in the book. If they’re two characters who never actually meet, imagine what it would be like if they ran into each other. If they know each other, picture a scene outside of your plotline—before the book is set, or after, or during but off-camera, and see what happens. If your book is a one-man show, throw your main character into an outside-of-the-plot situation (whether they’re buying groceries or having an argument with their mother). This can be a great way to help you get to know your characters a bit better, which can really benefit your writing!
