Meet the Team: Marina Reis

In 2017, Word Alive Press welcomed a new Project Manager to our team. With her education and passion for books, Marina Reis is an excellent addition to our team. We’ve asked her a couple of questions, and she has provided the answers below, so you can get to know her a little better.

Q: What is your favourite book and why?
A: I feel like I am betraying all my other favourite books if I just pick one, so I will go with my favourite book that I read in 2018, which was Zeroville by Steve Erickson. It’s a surrealist take on how immanent storytelling is to the human psyche.

Q: What is your favourite part about publishing?
A: I enjoy encouraging people to keep working on their craft and getting excited with them when that book finally enters the publishing process. Many writers work on their manuscripts for years and wonder if all this work will ever amount to a book, so it is great celebrating with them once it does.

Q: Why get into publishing?
A: I studied literature and creative writing at the University of Winnipeg, where I was fortunate enough to be taught by many great authors and work closely with my peers. To be able to transfer that schooling to other writers that may help them along their own writing or publishing journey just feels like the right extension of that experience.

Q: What book is on your nightstand right now?
A: The City Always Wins by Omar Robert Hamilton. It’s set in the days of the 2011 Egyptian revolution.

Q: Would you rather read digital or paper books?
A: Old paperbacks with swollen pages are my favourite. I like to think who read this book before me and if it meant as much to them as it does to me.
